Some Facts About Flossing From Drs. Hammond and Ellis

FLOSSING SOUNDS SO EASY, RIGHT? So why do some of us seem to have such a hard time getting it done? For something as seemingly simple as a piece of flavored string in a plastic container, why are there so many varieties? Waxed or unwaxed, mint or cinnamon flavored, flattened or round? Is it better to wrap it around your fingers? Use a wand to hold it? Sing while you’re doing it? When is the best time to floss?

Here’s the deal… the type of floss you use isn’t nearly as important as the amount and consistency with which you floss. There are so many options out there because there are so many different types of teeth! The floss thickness that works best for you can depend on the spacing of your teeth.

Just like toothpaste flavors, dental floss comes in many varieties to make flossing more enjoyable. Whatever method, flavor, or thickness you prefer, use the one that makes flossing most pleasant for you—thereby helping you floss more regularly.

Why is flossing important? Lots of reasons. First, flossing removes bacteria between teeth that, if left alone, will harden to become plaque, and then tartar. Tartar buildup can only be removed through your cleanings here at our office. And, like you, we want to make those as effective and comfortable for you as possible. Regular flossing helps that. If tartar is not removed it can cause gum swelling or bleeding, commonly called gingivitis, which is the first symptom of gum disease.

What’s the flossing rule of thumb? The American Dental Association recommends once a day as part of your oral routine. Because flossing helps clean where your toothbrush doesn’t reach, it’s helpful to floss first so that the fluoride from your toothpaste can get to all those hidden areas.

Drs. Hammond and Ellis prefer that you floss at night for a clean mouth before bedtime. Some of the people here at our practice use flossing wands to give them the perfect amount of tension. So set a routine, pick a flavor, and get flossing…  Keep those pearly whites healthy and clean!
